What Does Indian Railways PNR Number Signify ?

As usual PNR stands for Passenger Name Record . In Indian Railways PNR consists of a Ten digit number and the first digit of a PNR carries an important information.

Tickets Whose :

  •   PNR starting with ‘1’ are issued from South Central Railway  (SCR Zone) (issued from Secunderabad Passenger Reservation System (PRS) )
  • PNR starting with ‘2’ or ‘3’ are issued from either Northern Railway (NR) , North Central Railway (NCR), North Western Railway (NWR) , or North Eastern Railway (NER) Zone (issued from Delhi PRS)
  • PNR starting with ‘4’ or ‘5’ are issued from either Southern Railway (SR) , South Western Railway (SWR), or South Central Railway (SCR) Zone (issued from Chennai PRS)
  •  PNR starting with ‘6’ or ‘7’ are issued from either Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) , East Central Railway (ECR) , Eastern Railway (ER) , East Coast Railway (ECoR) , South Eastern Railway (SER) , or South East Central Railway  (SECR) Zone (issued from Kolkata PRS)
  •  PNR starting with ‘8’ or ‘9’ are issued from either Central Railway (CR) , West Central Railway  (WCR), or Western Railway (WR) Zone (issued from Mumbai PRS)
