Check Train Schedule, Route, Halts and Running Days

A train schedule is the planned timetable for a railway service. It helps passengers understand the train route, station sequence, arrival time, departure time, halt duration, journey day and running days. If you know the train number or train name, checking the schedule before travel makes it easier to plan boarding, connections, station arrival and expected journey duration.

Searches such as railway time, railway time table, Indian railway time or IRCTC train timings usually ask the same thing: when a train is planned to arrive at and leave each station. Use the train number search above, or type the train name, to open the Indian Railways schedule for that service with every halt in order.

The schedule is different from live running status. Train schedule shows the official planned timing for the service, while live train status shows what is happening on a particular journey date. For example, a train may be scheduled to reach a station at 10:30, but the live status for today may show expected arrival at 11:05 because of a delay. Both values are useful, but they answer different questions.

Train numbers are especially important because many trains have similar names or operate in both directions with different numbers. A route can also include technical halts, commercial halts and intermediate stations. Reading the station sequence helps you confirm whether your boarding station comes before or after another stop and whether the train actually halts where you plan to board.

Running days matter for weekly, biweekly and special trains. Some trains do not run every day from their source station, and the journey day shown for later stations may be different from the departure day. A train that leaves on Monday may reach a far station on Tuesday or Wednesday. This is why the date, source station and station sequence should be read together.

For better trip planning, use the timetable along with PNR status and live running status. The schedule tells you where the train is planned to stop, PNR status tells you whether your ticket is confirmed, and live status tells you how the train is moving on the actual travel date.

How to Use Train Schedule Information

Confirm the Right Train

Always verify the train number first. Train names can be reused, shortened or written differently, but the train number identifies the exact service and direction. This prevents confusion between up and down routes.

Read Arrival and Departure Separately

Arrival time shows when the train is planned to reach a station. Departure time shows when it is planned to leave. At source stations, only departure may matter; at terminal stations, only arrival may be shown.

Check the Halt Duration

Halt duration helps passengers know whether the train stops briefly or long enough for operational needs. Short halts should be treated carefully, especially at busy stations or when travelling with luggage.

Use Station Codes Carefully

Indian Railways station codes are useful for identifying stations with similar names. Check both the station name and code when planning boarding, reservation searches or connections.

Common Train Schedule Mistakes to Avoid

Do not check only the train name when planning a journey. The same name can appear in different directions, and special trains may use related names with different numbers. The train number is the safest way to identify the correct timetable, source, destination and route.

Do not confuse scheduled arrival with expected arrival. Scheduled arrival belongs to the timetable. Expected arrival belongs to live running status for a specific journey date. If a train is delayed today, the schedule still remains the official planned time, while live status shows the current estimate.

Do not ignore journey day on long-distance routes. A station listed after midnight may be shown on day 2 or day 3 of the journey. If you only look at the clock time and skip the journey day, you may reach the station on the wrong date.

Do not assume every station in the route is a boarding halt. Some points may be operational, passing or very short halts depending on the data shown. Confirm that the train has a scheduled commercial halt at your boarding or destination station before relying on it.

Train Schedule FAQ

What is included in a train schedule?

A schedule usually includes train number, train name, station sequence, arrival time, departure time, halt duration, distance, source, destination and running days.

Why are running days important?

Running days show when the train starts from its source station. Weekly and special trains may not run every day, so checking running days prevents date mistakes.

Is train schedule the same as live train status?

No. Train schedule is the planned timetable. Live train status shows current journey-day movement, delay, expected arrival and actual station updates.

When should I check the timetable again?

Check the timetable while planning, then check live status on the journey date. Recheck official updates if there are diversions, cancellations, special trains or seasonal timetable changes.

How do I search a train by number?

Type the 5 digit train number, or part of the train name, in the train number search above and pick the train from the list. The full timetable, route and running days open on one page.
