What is PNR?
PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. In railway travel, it is the unique booking reference connected to a reserved ticket.
What PNR means
A PNR is a record created for a passenger reservation. It connects the ticket to journey details such as train number, date, stations, class, passenger count and booking status.
Indian Railways PNR numbers are 10 digits. The number works as a compact reference so the booking can be retrieved without searching by passenger name or mobile number.
Where to find it
On an e-ticket, the PNR is usually shown near the top of the ticket details. On a counter ticket, it is printed on the ticket and may be labelled as PNR No.
Because many bookings can exist for the same train and date, always use the full 10 digit number rather than train number or passenger name.
What information it contains
A PNR status response can include the train number, train name, source, destination, boarding point, journey date, class, passenger booking status and current status.
For confirmed passengers, coach and berth details may be shown. If the chart is not prepared yet, those details can still be pending even when the status is confirmed.
