Waiting List in Railway PNR
Waiting list means a confirmed reservation is not available at booking time. The passenger is placed in a queue that can move if other passengers cancel.
What waiting list means
A waitlisted ticket shows that demand is higher than available seats or berths for that class and journey. The number after WL shows the passenger's position in that queue.
The booking status and current status may be different. A passenger booked as WL 25 may later move to WL 8, RAC or CNF.
Why waiting lists differ
Not all waiting lists behave the same way. GNWL, RLWL, PQWL and TQWL refer to different quota or route situations.
A lower current waiting list number is usually better than a higher number, but confirmation is never guaranteed only by the number.
Final check before travel
The reservation chart is important because it reflects the final allocation near departure. A waitlisted status after chart preparation should be read carefully.
Always use the PNR checker for the latest current status instead of relying only on the status shown when the ticket was booked.
