Konkan Railway – An Engineering Marvel Along India’s Western Coast

Title Konkan Railway – An Engineering Marvel Along India’s Western Coast Description The Konkan Railway is one of India’s most remarkable railway achievements, connecting Roha in Maharashtra with Thokur near Mangaluru in Karnataka through the scenic Konkan region. Spanning about 741 km, the route passes through Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka, crossing rugged mountains, deep valleys, rivers, and dense forests. Built by the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL), the railway became fully operational in 1998. Its construction required hundreds of bridges and more than 90 tunnels, making it one of the most challenging railway projects undertaken in India. Apart from significantly reducing travel time between Mumbai and southern coastal India, the Konkan Railway is famous for its breathtaking views of the Western Ghats, waterfalls, rivers, green valleys, and coastal landscapes. It remains a symbol of Indian engineering excellence and has played an important role in improving transportation, tourism, and economic development along India’s western coast.
