What is PNR Status in Indian Railways?
PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. It is a unique 10-digit number that Indian Railways assigns to every reserved ticket. When you check your PNR status, you get the current booking position of all passengers on that ticket.
The PNR status updates automatically as cancellations happen and the final chart is prepared. Understanding these codes helps you know whether you have a confirmed berth, a chance of confirmation, or if you need to make alternative plans.
How to Check PNR Status in 2026
You can check your PNR status in less than 30 seconds using these methods:
On Railopedia: Enter your 10-digit PNR number on our PNR Status page and click Check.
Official IRCTC website or app
SMS: Type PNR followed by your 10-digit number and send it to 139
NTES app or enquiry.indianrail.gov.in
Always keep your PNR number private. Anyone with the number can view your journey details.
Understanding All PNR Status Codes
1. CNF – Confirmed
CNF means your seat or berth is fully confirmed. After chart preparation, the system also shows the coach number and berth number (for example: S5/32 or B2/15).
Once you see CNF, you can travel without any worry. Carry a valid ID proof along with your ticket.
2. RAC – Reservation Against Cancellation
RAC means you have a confirmed seat but not a full berth. Two RAC passengers usually share one side-lower berth.
You can board the train with an RAC ticket. Many RAC tickets get upgraded to CNF when other passengers cancel before chart preparation.
3. WL – Waiting List
WL means your ticket is still on the waiting list. You do not have a confirmed seat yet. The number after WL (for example WL 15) shows your position in the queue.
If your ticket remains WL after chart preparation, Indian Railways automatically cancels it and refunds the amount (for e-tickets).
Other Common Status Codes
GNWL – General Waiting List (highest chance of confirmation)
RLWL – Remote Location Waiting List
PQWL – Pooled Quota Waiting List
TQWL – Tatkal Waiting List (lowest chance of confirmation)
CAN – Cancelled
What is Chart Preparation?
Chart preparation is the final process where Indian Railways locks the reservation list for a train. After the chart is prepared, no more upgrades from RAC or WL usually happen.
Key points about chart preparation:
It normally happens 4 hours before the scheduled departure of the train from the originating station.
For early morning trains, the chart may be prepared the previous night.
Once the chart is prepared, coach and berth numbers appear for CNF and RAC passengers.
Any ticket still showing WL after chart preparation gets cancelled automatically (for online bookings).
Booking Status vs Current Status
Many passengers get confused between these two:
Booking Status – The position you received at the time of booking (this never changes).
Current Status – The live position that keeps updating until chart preparation.
Always look at the Current Status. That is the only number that matters.
Tips to Improve Your Confirmation Chances
Book as early as possible (120 days in advance for general quota).
Prefer GNWL over other waiting list types when available.
Check PNR status regularly, especially 24–48 hours before departure.
Consider split tickets or alternative trains if your waiting list number is very high.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I board the train with an RAC ticket?
Yes. RAC passengers are allowed to board the train. You will get a sitting space and may get a full berth if upgrades happen.
What happens if my ticket is still WL after chart preparation?
For e-tickets, Indian Railways cancels the ticket automatically and refunds the fare. You cannot board the train.
When should I check my PNR status?
Check it after booking, then again 1–2 days before the journey, and finally after chart preparation.
Does the PNR status change after chart preparation?
Usually no. Once the chart is prepared, the status becomes final.
