Vande Bharat Sleeper trains mark the next major step for Indian Railways. These trains take the speed, safety, and modern design of the original Vande Bharat and adapt them for comfortable overnight travel.
Unlike the daytime Chair Car version that only offers seats, the Sleeper version provides proper sleeping berths while keeping the same high standards of comfort and technology.
What Is a Vande Bharat Sleeper Train?
Vande Bharat Sleeper is a fully air-conditioned, self-propelled trainset built for medium to long-distance overnight journeys (usually 800–1,200 km). Indian engineers designed and manufactured the trainset in India.
The train runs without a separate locomotive. Power spreads across the coaches. This design delivers faster acceleration, smoother braking, and better energy efficiency.
Current 16-coach configuration:
1 First AC (1A) coach – 24 berths
4 AC 2-Tier (2A) coaches – 188 berths
11 AC 3-Tier (3A) coaches – 611 berths
Total capacity: 823 passengers
Design speed stands at 180 km/h. Operational speed reaches up to 160 km/h depending on the route and track condition.

How to Book Tickets
You can book Vande Bharat Sleeper tickets through:
IRCTC website or mobile app
Authorised agents
Railway station counters
Fares sit higher than regular AC Express or Rajdhani trains but remain competitive with flights on the same routes. Catering is usually included. Cancellation rules are stricter than normal trains, so check the latest refund policy before you book.
Why These Trains Matter
Vande Bharat Sleeper closes an important gap. Passengers who wanted modern amenities and higher speeds for overnight journeys previously had limited options. These trains combine the reliability of sleeper accommodation with the technology and ride quality of the original Vande Bharat.
As more routes open and longer 24-coach versions arrive, overnight rail travel in India becomes faster, cleaner, and more comfortable for a much larger number of passengers.
