RAILWAY FACT DETAIL

First Indian Steam Locomotive

Long before modern Make in India locomotives, railway engineers at Ajmer Workshop successfully built a steam locomotive in India in 1895.

Domestic railway manufacturing in India has roots extending back to the nineteenth century.

In 1895, the Ajmer Workshop of the Rajputana Malwa Railway built steam locomotive F-734.

It is recorded by Indian Railways as the first steam locomotive manufactured in India.

The achievement was significant because India's early railway system relied heavily on locomotives and railway equipment manufactured overseas.

This early manufacturing milestone foreshadowed India's eventual development into a major producer of railway equipment, ranging from electric locomotives to modern self-propelled Vande Bharat trainsets
