Vande Bharat Express represents one of the biggest technological upgrades in Indian passenger rail travel. Developed and manufactured in India, the train is a self-propelled Electric Multiple Unit (EMU), meaning traction equipment is distributed across the train rather than relying entirely on a conventional locomotive at the front.
One of the most notable records associated with Vande Bharat is its 180 km/h high-speed trial performance. Vande Bharat trainsets have undergone testing at this speed to evaluate stability, braking performance, suspension, vibration, safety systems and overall ride quality.
However, the 180 km/h figure must not be confused with normal passenger operations. Indian Railways identifies 180 km/h as the design speed of current Vande Bharat trainsets and 160 km/h as their maximum operating speed. Actual speeds on individual services can be lower because railway speed depends on track geometry, signalling systems, curves, bridges, level crossings, maintenance restrictions and other infrastructure conditions.
The newer Vande Bharat Sleeper train also successfully completed a Commissioner of Railway Safety high-speed trial at 180 km/h on the Kota–Nagda section in December 2025. During the trial, systems such as braking, vibration behaviour, ride stability and emergency braking were evaluated.
Vande Bharat trains also feature rapid acceleration and deceleration, which can reduce journey times even on routes where the train cannot continuously run at its maximum permissible speed.
Therefore, Vande Bharat's 180 km/h achievement should be described specifically as a trial or design-speed achievement, rather than a regular commercial operating speed.
