During 2023–24, Indian Railways carried 6,905 million passengers, equivalent to approximately 6.905 billion passenger journeys.
That represented an increase from 6,396 million passengers during the previous financial year.
Of the 6.905 billion journeys, approximately 3.981 billion were suburban passenger journeys, while about 2.924 billion were non-suburban.
Passenger kilometres reached approximately 1.065 trillion, showing not only how many journeys were made but also the enormous cumulative distance travelled.
These figures demonstrate why railways remain one of India's most important forms of public transportation.
