1.252 million

Indian Railways is one of India's largest organisations in terms of workforce and requires employees across a wide range of technical, operational and administrative roles.

As of 31 March 2024, Indian Railways recorded approximately 1.252 million regular employees, equivalent to about 12.52 lakh people.

This workforce includes locomotive pilots, train managers, station masters, engineers, technicians, track maintainers, signalling personnel, electrical staff, railway protection personnel, medical employees and administrative teams.

Operating such a large railway network requires much more than running trains. Thousands of employees work around the clock to maintain tracks, locomotives, coaches, electrical systems, signalling equipment, stations and other railway infrastructure.

Indian Railways also operates specialised production units, workshops, hospitals, training institutes and engineering organisations that require additional skilled personnel.

The size of the workforce demonstrates the enormous human effort involved in keeping India's railway network functioning every day.
