Importance
The railway became an engineering landmark and demonstrated innovative solutions for operating trains through steep gradients and mountainous terrain.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway became operational to Darjeeling in 1881 and became one of the most remarkable railway engineering achievements of nineteenth-century India.

The narrow-gauge railway was designed to negotiate steep Himalayan terrain where conventional railway construction was extremely challenging.

Its route became famous for sharp curves, loops and other engineering solutions that allowed small steam locomotives to climb from the plains toward Darjeeling.

Beyond tourism, the railway played an important historical role in improving the movement of people and goods between the hill region and the plains.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway later became internationally recognised for its historical and engineering significance and is today an important part of India's railway heritage.
