The WAG-9HH is a high-powered electric freight locomotive developed by Indian Railways as an upgraded version of the widely used WAG-9 family.
The original WAG-9 platform has played a major role in electric freight transportation across India. To improve its performance with heavier freight trains, Indian Railways developed the WAG-9HH by increasing continuous rated power from approximately 6,000 HP to 9,000 HP.
The locomotive was developed under the Make in India initiative, with the prototype manufactured by Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW).
RDSO documentation lists the locomotive's continuous rated power at approximately 7,000 kW, or 9,000 HP, with a maximum sanctioned operating speed of 100 km/h.
The additional power improves the locomotive's acceleration reserve, particularly when hauling heavy freight trains. This is important on busy railway corridors because freight trains that accelerate more effectively can clear railway sections more quickly and improve overall line capacity.
The WAG-9HH uses modern three-phase electric traction technology and regenerative braking. During regenerative braking, electrical energy produced by the traction motors can be returned to the overhead electrical network.
The WAG-9HH therefore represents an important intermediate class between traditional 6,000 HP WAG-9 locomotives and the significantly more powerful 12,000 HP WAG-12B.
