Anantapur railway station on the Guntakal–Bangalore line
Anantapur railway station (code ATP) serves Anantapur city in Andhra Pradesh's Rayalaseema region. It lies on the Guntakal–Bangalore section and is classified NSG-3 in the Guntakal division, now part of the South Coast Railway. The station handles over 18,000 passengers a day, making it one of the busiest in the division.
History
- 1892: Anantapur station opens to traffic on the new Guntakal–Bangalore line.
- 1893: the metre-gauge Guntakal–Mysore Frontier Railway opens, operated by the Southern Mahratta Railway.
- 14 July 2016: the Gooty–Bangalore line through Anantapur is fully electrified.
From the start, the station connected Rayalaseema with Karnataka and became an important point for trade and passenger traffic in the region.
Platforms and trains
Anantapur has 4 platforms, each able to take trains of more than 21 coaches. Around 41 pairs of passenger trains pass through daily with halts of more than two minutes. The station has direct trains to Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai and New Delhi. Well-known trains that halt here include the Prasanthi Express, Karnataka Express and Kondaveedu Express. North of Anantapur lies Guntakal Junction, and south the line heads towards Bengaluru.
