Bangalore East railway station, a 1906 station in Fraser Town
Bangalore East railway station, also known as Bengaluru East (station code BNCE), is a British-era station in Fraser Town, in the old Bangalore Cantonment area. It is run by the Bengaluru division of the South Western Railway and is surrounded by Pottery Road, Kumaraswamy Naidu Road, Murgesha Mudaliar Road and Kenchappa Road. It has long been handy for residents travelling to Kolar Gold Fields or Chennai.
History
- 1864: the Madras Railway starts services between Bangalore Cantonment and Jolarpettai, a 149 km broad-gauge line.
- 1906: Bangalore East station is built on the Bangalore–Madras line. At the time, trains from Madras ended at Bangalore Cantonment, in the British-controlled Civil and Military Station.
- 1920s: mail and express trains start stopping here.
- 2025–26: the station closes temporarily for rebuilding under the Bengaluru Cantonment–Whitefield quadrupling project.
- 25 May 2026: passenger services resume after the upgrade.
Platforms and lines
Bengaluru East has 2 platforms on four tracks, linked by a foot overbridge and long enough for 24-coach express trains, as well as MEMUs. It is on the Chennai Central–Bangalore City line and the line to Kolar Gold Fields, between Bengaluru Cantonment and Baiyappanahalli. Trains continue west to KSR Bengaluru City and east towards Chennai Central.
Local character
Next to the station is the Bangalore East Football Grounds, these days more often used for cricket. Cartoonist Paul Fernandes has recalled befriending train drivers here as a boy and getting grease for his bicycle. The station serves Fraser Town, Cox Town and Cooke Town, about 915 metres above sea level.
