Barrackpore station on the Sealdah main line
Barrackpore station (code BP) is an SG-2 graded railway station in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area, serving Barrackpore and its surroundings in North 24 Parganas. It lies on the Sealdah–Ranaghat line of the Kolkata Suburban Railway and comes under the Sealdah division of the Eastern Railway. Its neighbours are Titagarh towards Sealdah and Palta towards Ranaghat.
History
- 1862: the Eastern Bengal Railway opens its Sealdah–Kushtia line, and Barrackpore gets rail service.
- 1963–65: the Sealdah–Ranaghat sector, including Barrackpore, is electrified at 25 kV AC.
The lost racecourse branch
A branch once left Barrackpore for the cantonment area, serving Barrackpore Racecourse station (code BPPS). In British times, steam trains on a single track carried passengers to race meetings at the course behind the criminal court. The line has since fallen out of public use; the racecourse station is used only by the Indian Army, with an annual maintenance run by a diesel inspection carriage.
Getting to and from Barrackpore
A suburban train from Sealdah takes about 35–40 minutes, passing Dum Dum. Slow and semi-fast locals link most towns of Barrackpore subdivision with Kolkata, while the wider network reaches Bongaon, Dankuni, Howrah, Bardhaman and Bandel, and Circular Railway services also run to and from the station. Outside, bus routes 85, 81, E32, C29 and S11 stop nearby, and BT Road is close at hand.
Station facilities
The platforms are fully sheltered. There are staffed ticket counters, automatic ticket machines, drinking water and toilets, and a second-class waiting room on platform 1 next to the station master's office. Wheelchair access is available at the entrances on platforms 1 and 4, and parking is available. The station has six tracks and stands at the junction of Ghoshpara Road and S. N. Banerjee Road.
