Belur station on the Howrah main line
Belur station (code BEQ) is a Kolkata Suburban Railway station in Howrah district, West Bengal, serving the town of Belur and nearby areas. It is in the Howrah division of the Eastern Railway and sits on both the Howrah–Bardhaman main line and the Howrah–Bardhaman chord, just 7 km from Howrah.
Belur or Belur Math?
Visitors often mix up two stations:
- Belur (BEQ): a through station on the main line and chord, used by local trains running out of Howrah.
- Belur Math (BRMH): a separate terminal station, connected with Howrah, built to serve Belur Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission. The Math, founded by Swami Vivekananda in 1898 on the banks of the Ganga, is about 1.5 km from that station.
If you are heading to Belur Math, check whether your local train goes to the Belur Math terminal before boarding.
On India's oldest eastern railway
- 1851: the East Indian Railway Company begins building a line out of Howrah towards Delhi via Rajmahal and Mirzapur.
- 15 August 1854: the first passenger train in eastern India runs from Howrah to Hooghly, passing through the Belur area.
- 1855: the track reaches Raniganj.
- 1958: the Howrah–Bardhaman main line is electrified at 25 kV AC.
Practical information
The station is on Dharmatolla Road, about 18 metres above sea level. Parking is limited, so it is easier to arrive by auto, bus or on foot. Trains are frequent through the day in both directions; heading out of Howrah, the main line continues towards Bandel and Bardhaman while the chord takes a more direct route to Bardhaman.
