Chunar Junction, where the Chopan line begins
Chunar Junction (station code CAR) is a railway station in Mirzapur district, Uttar Pradesh, serving the town of Chunar and the surrounding area. It lies on the DDU–Kanpur section of the Howrah–New Delhi main line and is run by the Prayagraj division of the North Central Railway. From here, a single electrified line branches south to Chopan in Sonbhadra district.
History
- 1864: the East Indian Railway's Howrah–Delhi line is ready up to Naini, and Chunar station opens.
- 1865–66: once the Old Naini Bridge is completed, through trains begin running.
- 1954: the 79.07 km broad-gauge Chunar–Chopan line is built.
- 1965–66: the Dagmagpur–Cheoki section through Chunar is electrified.

Chunar Junction has 5 platforms on eight tracks, about 85 metres above sea level. Around 50 trains halt here, a mix of superfast, express, Amrit Bharat, MEMU and passenger services, with a couple originating and terminating. Well-known trains that stop include the Mahanagari Superfast Express, Chambal Express, Shipra Express, Purushottam Superfast Express and Tapti Ganga Express.
Location and access
Chunar is between Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction to the east and Mirzapur and Prayagraj to the west. The nearest airport is Varanasi (Babatpur), about 41 km away. There is no parking at the station, so most passengers arrive by auto or bus. Chunar town is known for its historic Chunar Fort.
