Where east met west
For railway history, Jabalpur Junction (code JBP) marks a milestone: the place where India's first through rail connection between Bombay and Calcutta was completed. Two companies built towards each other: the East Indian Railway from Allahabad and the Great Indian Peninsula Railway from Bombay. When their lines met here, passengers could cross the subcontinent by train for the first time.
- 1867: rail connectivity reaches Jabalpur with the opening of the line from Naini (Allahabad).
- 1870: the station is officially inaugurated by the Viceroy, Lord Mayo, marking the completed Bombay–Calcutta link.
- 2003: Jabalpur becomes headquarters of the newly formed West Central Railway zone.
That 1870 junction later became part of the Howrah–Prayagraj–Mumbai route, and Jabalpur remains a critical link between north, east and west India.
A modern NSG-1 station
Jabalpur is graded NSG-1 and heads its own division. It is ISO 14001:2015 certified for environmental management, runs entirely on electric traction, and draws roughly a quarter of its daily energy from solar power. About 125,000 passengers use it daily.
Redevelopment under Amrit Bharat
A rebuild costing about ₹460 crore is under way under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. It includes a 40,000 sq ft roof plaza over the tracks, 24 escalators, 30 lifts, a unified digital information system and an eighth platform. The station currently has 7 platforms on 10 tracks, about 411 metres above sea level.
Trains and connections
Vande Bharat services link Jabalpur with Indore, Rewa and Bhopal, alongside express trains on the Howrah–Mumbai route and towards Delhi via Katni. Check timings in our train timetable. Locally:
- Madan Mahal station is 3.7 km away; some trains stop there instead.
- Dumna Airport is about 15 km away and the city bus terminal about 5 km.
Marble rocks and more
Jabalpur is the base for Bhedaghat, where the Narmada flows through gleaming marble gorges and the Dhuandhar falls, and for the tiger reserves of Kanha and Bandhavgarh, reached by road.
