Jhansi today

Virangana Lakshmibai Jhansi Junction (station code VGLJ), known until 2022 as Jhansi Junction (code JHS), is the main railway hub of the Bundelkhand region. It handles more than 250 passenger and express trains a day on the Delhi–Chennai and Delhi–Mumbai corridors and towards Lucknow and Kanpur. It is administered by the North Central Railway zone and heads the Jhansi division.

Jhansi through the years

The station was built in the late 1880s and opened in 1889. It was the headquarters and operational centre of the Indian Midland Railway, which built lines across central India. Electrification came in 1986–87.

On 1 January 2022 the station was renamed in honour of Rani Lakshmibai, the queen of Jhansi and a heroine of the 1857 uprising, and its code changed from JHS to VGLJ.

Architecture

Jhansi's main building is one of the most recognisable in north India. It has a fort-like design painted in maroon and off-white, a nod to the city's famous fort.

Platforms and sheds

Trains use 8 platforms, with 2 more proposed, on 13 tracks, some 260 metres up. Platform 1 is about 770 metres long. Jhansi is also a major locomotive base, with an electric loco shed for over 150 locomotives and a diesel shed with 131 active locomotives.
