Kashi railway station, Varanasi's eastern stop
Kashi railway station (code KEI) is one of the railway stations of Varanasi, in the Varanasi division of the Northern Railway. It serves the eastern suburbs of Varanasi district and works as a major secondary station for both Varanasi Junction and Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction.
Where Kashi station is
- About 6 km east of Varanasi Junction
- About 11 km north-west of Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction
- About 26 km from Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport
Auto-rickshaws and buses connect the station with the city, and parking is available.
Platforms and trains
Kashi has 3 platforms, with four electrified tracks passing through. On an average day two trains originate here and about 38 trains halt. Because it is smaller and quieter than Varanasi Junction, it can be a convenient boarding point if you live in eastern Varanasi.
Kashi, Banaras and Varanasi Junction
Varanasi has several stations with similar names, which often confuses travellers. Kashi (KEI) and Varanasi Junction (BSB) are run by the Northern Railway, while Banaras (BSBS), formerly Manduadih, belongs to the North Eastern Railway. Always check the station code on your ticket.
A makeover and bigger plans
The railways spent up to ₹1 crore redeveloping the station, with new waiting rooms, circulating areas and a foot overbridge. The walls were painted with religious and cultural artwork, and LED and decorative lighting were added. Looking ahead, the National Highways Authority of India has chosen Kashi for an Intermodal Station on about 47 acres, combining rail, road, mass transit, bus rapid transit and inland waterways under a public–private partnership.
