Nungambakkam station on Chennai's South line
Nungambakkam station (code NBK) is a stop on the Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu section of the Chennai Suburban Railway, run by the Southern Railway. It serves the central Chennai neighbourhood of Nungambakkam and lies about 8 km from Chennai Beach, on Station View Road in Choolaimedu. It is served by both the South and South West suburban lines.
Built on a lake bed
Before 1923, the stretch between today's Chetpet and Kodambakkam stations was covered by the Nungambakkam Tank, a large water body. The station was built while the electric suburban railway was laid between 1928 and 1931, and the line opened with electric trains in 1931. The section switched from DC to 25 kV AC traction on 15 January 1967. The station stands about 11 metres above sea level.

A turning point for station safety
Although it is one of the busier stations in downtown Chennai, Nungambakkam once lacked basic safety measures such as CCTV cameras. A murder on the station premises on 24 June 2016 drew wide media attention and a public outcry over safety at suburban stations, leading to demands for better surveillance across the network. Travelling at quieter hours, stay in well-lit, busier parts of the platform.
