History
- 29 November 1979: the first lines at the station are electrified, as part of the Chennai Central–Tiruvallur electrification.
- 2 October 1986: more lines are electrified with the Villivakkam–Avadi section.
- June 2014: a 1.15 km, two-lane road overbridge with 21 spans opens over level crossing no. 5, linking Aavin Dairy Road in Ambattur with Karukku Main Road. The ₹350 million project was sanctioned in 2009 and built jointly by the State Highways department and the Southern Railway.
Layout
The station has four tracks, two of them only for suburban trains. These are served by a side platform and an island platform, linked by a pedestrian footbridge. The entrance and ticket counter are on the side platform. The station is about 16 metres above sea level, and parking is available.
Traffic and facilities
Pattaravakkam handles at least 5,000 to 6,000 commuters a day, earning around ₹50,000 daily. Even so, it has lacked basic amenities for years: its only staff building is a 48 sq ft room holding the single ticket counter, with no room for a station master or security staff. Buy tickets early or use a mobile ticketing app at peak times. Trains continue west towards Avadi and Arakkonam.
