Srinagar railway station, Kashmir on the national network
Srinagar railway station (code SINA) serves the city of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir. It lies on the Jammu–Baramulla line in the Jammu division of the Northern Railway, at Nowgam, about 8 km from the city centre. The station stands about 1,591 metres above sea level.
From valley line to through route
- 2008: the station opens on the Kashmir Valley section of the line, with trains running within the valley towards Baramulla and Banihal.
- 2022: the Chenab Bridge between Sangaldan and Reasi is completed; it is the world's highest railway bridge.
- 6 June 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the Vande Bharat Express between Srinagar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, finally linking the valley by train with the rest of India.
- 30 April 2026: the Vande Bharat (26403/26404) is extended to Jammu Tawi.
The Vande Bharat runs along the 272 km Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla rail corridor, calling at Banihal, SMVD Katra and Udhampur, and crossing the Chenab Bridge and the Banihal tunnel.
Kashmiri design
The station is built in Kashmiri wood architecture, designed to feel like a royal court and blend with its surroundings. Signs are mainly in Urdu, English and Hindi. The IRCTC plans a hotel close to the station. Budgam station, nearby, is the main base for train maintenance in Kashmir.
Future plans
Srinagar is also planned to be part of a second line, the Srinagar–Kargil–Leh line.
