Introducing Surat
Surat railway station (station code ST) is the main station of Surat, Gujarat's second-largest city and a global centre of diamond cutting and textiles. It lies on the New Delhi–Mumbai main line and belongs to the Western Railway zone, within the Mumbai division. Almost every train between Mumbai and Gujarat, Rajasthan and north India passes through Surat.
Surat's history
The station was built in 1860, in the first years of the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway, which laid its early lines through south Gujarat. The line through Surat was electrified in 1970.
In early 2016 a rating by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) named Surat the best large station in India for cleanliness.
Inside Surat
For such a busy station, Surat is compact: it has 4 platforms (two side platforms and an island platform) on 6 tracks, in an above-grade structure. Because so many through trains stop briefly, platforms change quickly. The station is being partly redeveloped, and some platforms have had limited access during renovation.
