Taramani railway station on the Chennai MRTS
Taramani railway station (code TRMN) is a station on the Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), the elevated suburban line run by the Southern Railway. It is located off MGR Main Road in Taramani, in south Chennai, and is served only by MRTS trains.
History
Taramani opened on 19 November 2007 as part of the MRTS's second phase, which had reached Thiruvanmiyur in 2004 and was extended to Velachery in 2007. The long-delayed extension from Velachery to St. Thomas Mount was finally completed in March 2026.
Where it sits on the line
Counting from Chennai Beach, Taramani is the fifteenth station on the MRTS line to St. Thomas Mount. Coming back from St. Thomas Mount, it is the sixth station towards Beach. The MRTS runs at ground level from Beach to Park Town alongside the suburban line, then rises onto its elevated viaduct through the city's southern neighbourhoods. A 3.4 km, 18 m-wide access road is being built along the line from Velachery to Taramani, improving access to Taramani and Perungudi stations.

The MRTS and the Metro
As of 2023 the MRTS carried about 100,000 passengers a day. In 2022 the Southern Railway gave in-principle approval for Chennai Metro Rail to take over the MRTS, with coaches, stations and other infrastructure to be upgraded to metro standards, so Taramani may eventually become a metro station.
