A station named after an industrialist
Tatanagar is one of the few major Indian stations named after a person from business rather than politics or religion. It serves Jamshedpur, the steel city built around the Tata steel works, and its code is simply TATA. Originally the station was called Kalimati. In 1919 it was renamed Tatanagar in honour of Jamsetji Tata, whose vision led to the steel plant and the city around it.
From Sakchi to steel city
In December 1907, the village of Sakchi, near the meeting of the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers, was identified as the ideal site for India's first large steel plant, with iron ore, coal, water and, crucially, a railway close by. Kalimati station, opened in 1910, grew with the plant, and the town that sprang up was named Jamshedpur.
The smallpox episode of 1974
Tatanagar has a little-known place in public-health history. During the global campaign to eradicate smallpox, a severe outbreak struck Jamshedpur in 1974. Because so many workers and travellers passed through, the station was described as "the world's greatest exporter of smallpox", as infected passengers carried the disease along the railway. Containing the Jamshedpur outbreak became one of the decisive efforts in eradicating the disease from India.
The station today
Tatanagar has 6 platforms on 8 tracks. It belongs to the South Eastern Railway's Chakradharpur division and is graded NSG-2. About 100,000 passengers and around 100 trains use it each day. Electrification arrived in 1957.
Redevelopment
A redevelopment of the station was launched with a virtual foundation-stone ceremony on 26 February 2024, with an outlay of about ₹335 crore; the tender was awarded at about ₹284 crore, and the bhoomi pujan for construction took place on 12 October 2025.
Trains from the steel city
Services include the Bhubaneswar Rajdhani Express, the Mumbai CSMT–Howrah Duronto, and Vande Bharat trains linking Jamshedpur with Howrah, Patna and other cities. The famous Steel Express is a long-standing link to Howrah. For timings, use our train schedule page.
