Virudhunagar railway station, where four lines meet
Virudhunagar railway station (code VPT), officially Virudhunagar Junction, serves the town of Virudhunagar in southern Tamil Nadu. It is an NSG-3 station in the Madurai division of the Southern Railway, located on the north-eastern side of town beside the SIDCO industrial estate. More than 120 trains pass through.
Four routes from VPT
- North: to Madurai Junction (double line, electrified).
- South: to Vanchi Maniyachchi Junction via Satur and Kovilpatti (double line, electrified), towards Tirunelveli.
- West: to Tenkasi Junction (single line, electrified).
- North-east: to Manamadurai Junction via Aruppukkottai (single line, electrified).
The nearest stations are Kalligudi (11 km north), Tulukapati (15 km south), Tiruttangal (21 km west) and Aruppukkottai (21 km north-east).
Traffic and earnings
In 2022–23 the station earned about ₹26.6 crore, or roughly ₹7.3 lakh a day. It recorded 1,338,063 passengers that year, about 3,666 a day, and a daily footfall of 6,802.
Trains
Most trains get a two-minute halt here. The Virudhunagar–Karaikkudi Express, which made its inaugural run on 7 September 2013, is the only train that both starts and ends at Virudhunagar. The Chennai–Nagercoil Vande Bharat Express also passes through. Buses, taxis and auto-rickshaws connect the station with the town.
Upgrades
Virudhunagar is one of 73 Tamil Nadu stations selected for redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The station has seven tracks, at about 101 metres above sea level.
