RAILWAY FACT DETAIL

India's UNESCO Mountain Railways

India's railway heritage is globally recognised through three historic mountain railways that remain operational today.

India's historic mountain railway engineering has received international recognition from UNESCO.

The Mountain Railways of India World Heritage property consists of three railway systems.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was inscribed in 1999. The property was expanded to include the Nilgiri Mountain Railway in 2005 and the Kalka–Shimla Railway in 2008.

Remarkably, all three remain operational railway systems rather than purely museum exhibits.

Their continued operation preserves historic railway engineering while allowing passengers to experience mountain railway travel much as earlier generations did.
