Duronto Express is a family of premium long-distance passenger services introduced by Indian Railways to provide faster connections between major cities.
Unlike Gatimaan Express or a particular Vande Bharat service, Duronto Express is not one individual train. Multiple Duronto services operate on different routes across the Indian Railways network.
Selected Duronto services are capable of operating at maximum permissible speeds of up to 130 km/h where railway infrastructure and rolling stock permit.
Their actual speed varies considerably during a journey. Every railway route consists of sections with different speed limits depending on track standards, signalling, curves, bridges, station approaches and other infrastructure.
The original Duronto concept focused on reducing journey time by limiting intermediate commercial stops. Although operational patterns have evolved, Duronto trains continue to provide important long-distance connectivity.
Many Duronto services use modern LHB coaches, which are designed to provide improved ride quality, high-speed stability and greater passenger safety compared with older ICF coach designs.
The 130 km/h figure should therefore be described as a maximum permissible speed for applicable Duronto services and sections, rather than an average speed or a speed achieved throughout the entire journey.
This distinction is important because users often confuse a train's maximum speed with its average or commercial speed.
