- Importance
- Vande Bharat represented a major shift from locomotive-hauled premium trains toward domestically manufactured, self-propelled electric trainsets with distributed traction and modern passenger technology.
Vande Bharat Express marked a major transformation in Indian passenger railway technology.
The first service was inaugurated in February 2019 on the New Delhi–Varanasi corridor.
Unlike conventional passenger trains where a separate locomotive pulls the coaches, Vande Bharat uses a self-propelled trainset configuration with traction equipment distributed through the train.
This arrangement provides faster acceleration and deceleration and is particularly useful for intercity routes with multiple stops.
The train also introduced modern features including automatic doors, regenerative braking, passenger information systems, CCTV surveillance and improved onboard amenities.
Designed and manufactured in India, Vande Bharat became an important symbol of domestic railway engineering and has subsequently expanded into a nationwide family of train services.
