India's passenger railway history began on 16 April 1853 with a historic journey between Bombay and Thane.

India's first passenger railway journey took place on 16 April 1853 between Bori Bunder in Bombay, now Mumbai, and Thane.

The train was operated by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway and covered roughly 34 kilometres. It consisted of 14 carriages carrying about 400 invited passengers.

This journey marked the beginning of organised passenger rail transportation in India and eventually led to the development of one of the world's largest railway networks.
