Agra Cantt today
Agra Cantonment (station code AGC), usually called Agra Cantt, is the main railway station of Agra and the arrival point for most visitors to the Taj Mahal. It is near Sadar Bazaar in the south-west of the city, about 5.7 km from the Taj Mahal, 5.2 km from Agra Fort and 3.6 km from Agra airport. It is part of the North Central Railway zone, heads the Agra division, and handles about 13.4 million passengers a year.
Agra Cantt through the years
- 1874: the metre-gauge Delhi–Bandikui and Bandikui–Agra lines of the Rajputana State Railway open, bringing the railway to Agra.
- 1904: the broad-gauge Agra–Delhi chord opens, and Agra Cantt station dates from this year.
- 1982–85: the Faridabad–Mathura–Agra section is electrified, followed by Tundla–Yamuna Bridge in 1988–89 and Yamuna Bridge–Agra in 1990–91.
- 2005: the Agra–Jaipur line is converted to broad gauge.
The Gatimaan Express
Agra Cantt is famous as a terminus of the Gatimaan Express, launched in 2016 as India's first train to run at 160 km/h in regular service, linking Agra with Hazrat Nizamuddin in Delhi in under two hours. It made a same-day Taj Mahal trip from Delhi easy.

Travel tips
- Prepaid taxis and autos run to the Taj Mahal; vehicles must stop short of the monument, and the last stretch is by electric shuttle or on foot.
- The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays; plan day trips accordingly.
- Mathura, birthplace of Krishna, is a short train ride away.
