Aluva railway station, north Kochi's gateway
Aluva railway station (code AWY, historically Alwaye) is an NSG-3 station in the Thiruvananthapuram division of the Southern Railway. It mainly serves passengers from the northern part of Kochi and lies on the Shoranur–Cochin Harbour section. It is the city's third-busiest station, after Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town (Ernakulam North).
Why so many people use Aluva
Almost every train passing through the region stops here, except the Rajdhani and a few superfast trains. Aluva is the most convenient station for:
- Cochin International Airport passengers
- Kalamassery, Kakkanad, North Paravur and Kodungallur
- Perumbavoor, Kothamangalam, Muvattupuzha and Idukki district
Because it is closest to Perumbavoor, Aluva handles the largest number of migrant workers of any station in Kerala.
Connections
The station is right beside the Aluva KSRTC bus stand, one of Kochi's main bus terminals, and about a kilometre from Aluva metro station on the Kochi Metro. That makes it an easy transfer point between long-distance trains, buses and the metro into the city.
Platforms and revenue
Aluva has 3 platforms for long-distance and passenger trains, plus one platform for cargo, on six tracks. It sees around 12,160 passengers a day. In 2018–19 it earned about ₹63.38 crore, the third-highest in Ernakulam district, fifth in Kerala and 19th on the Southern Railway. The next major station north is Angamaly.
