Anand Vihar Terminal today
Anand Vihar Terminal (station code ANVT) is Delhi's newest major railway terminal, built specifically to handle trains heading east, to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and the north-east. It is in East Delhi, close to the Uttar Pradesh border, and belongs to the Northern Railway zone, within the Delhi division. The station site covers about 42 hectares.
Why it was built
By the early 2000s, Delhi's older stations were struggling with the volume of trains to the east, especially at festival times when millions travel home to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Anand Vihar was planned as a dedicated eastern terminal.
- 25 January 2004: foundation stone laid.
- 2004–2009: initial infrastructure built at a cost of about ₹850 million (₹85 crore).
- 19 December 2009: inaugurated by Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
- 2010: after a stampede at New Delhi station on 16 May 2010, several long-distance trains were permanently moved to originate at Anand Vihar.
The station today
ANVT has 7 platforms and 12 tracks in a two-storey building with subways designed for passengers with disabilities. Facilities include Wi-Fi, touch-screen enquiry systems, ATMs and foreign exchange counters.
- 2016: a 1.1 MW rooftop solar plant was installed.
- 2020: the station received a five-star rating for its food-related facilities.
- 2025–26: a ₹224.48 crore airport-style upgrade is in progress.
Who calls at Anand Vihar Terminal
More than 50 trains start or stop here, including Vande Bharat, Rajdhani, Humsafar and Amrit Bharat Express services to eastern India. During the Chhath and Diwali seasons the station runs many additional special trains. Bihar- and Bengal-bound departures from ANVT, including festival specials, are on Railopedia's schedule page.

Anand Vihar pointers
- If your ticket says ANVT, don't go to New Delhi; the two stations are on opposite sides of the Yamuna.
- Arriving by metro avoids the heavy road traffic around the ISBT.
- During Chhath the platforms fill hours before departure; check your coach on PNR status so you can head straight to the right spot.
