About Lokmanya Tilak Terminus
Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (station code LTT), Mumbai's Lokmanya Tilak train station, is one of Mumbai's main long-distance railway terminals, located at Kurla in the eastern suburbs. Unlike the city's historic termini at Fort and Mumbai Central, LTT is a modern station built for one job: starting and ending long-distance express trains. It comes under the Central Railway zone's Mumbai division.
LTT handles a large share of Mumbai's trains to South India, the Hindi heartland and the north-east. More than 60 named services start here, to destinations including Secunderabad, Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Prayagraj, Guwahati and Agartala.
How Lokmanya Tilak Terminus began
The terminus opened in 1991 as Kurla Terminus. It was renamed in honour of the freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak, popularly called Lokmanya Tilak; the Mumbai municipal corporation approved the change in 1996 and the Union government confirmed it in 1999.
By the early 2000s, the city's great Victorian terminus, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), had reached saturation and could not take any more express trains. In 2003, Central Railway decided to expand LTT so it could absorb more long-distance traffic. The rebuilt terminus, spread across a site of about 50,000 square metres with a 3,300 square metre concourse, was inaugurated on 16 April 2013 after about three years of work.
Platforms and facilities
LTT has 7 platforms and 23 tracks, 7 metres or so above sea level. Facilities added during the 2013 revamp include a 24-bed air-conditioned dormitory for women. A rainwater harvesting system with a capacity of 700,000 litres was installed in October 2012.
Next to the terminus is the Kurla diesel loco shed, one of the depots that maintains diesel locomotives for Central Railway; as of August 2025 it held 74 active locomotives.
How to reach LTT
LTT is not on a suburban line itself, so most passengers arrive by local train and complete the last stretch by road or on foot:
- Kurla station: the nearest major suburban station, on the Central main line and Harbour line. Share autorickshaws run from Kurla to the terminus.
- Tilak Nagar station: on the Harbour line, with a direct foot overbridge towards the terminus.
- Road: BEST buses, a taxi stand and a prepaid autorickshaw service operate at the terminus.

Travel tips
- Check the station code on your ticket carefully: LTT and CSMT are about 15 km apart, and both are Central Railway termini.
- Leave extra time for the road leg from Kurla or Tilak Nagar during peak hours.
- Many LTT trains run long distances to the south and east; live running status tracks the incoming rake and PNR status shows your coach once charted.
