Introducing Mumbai Central
Mumbai Central railway station (station code MMCT) is the main long-distance terminus of the Western Railway in Mumbai, under the Mumbai division. It is best known as the starting point of the Mumbai Rajdhani and other premium trains towards Gujarat, Rajasthan and Delhi, and it is also a stop on the Western line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway.
Mumbai Central's history
The station was built to give the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway a modern terminus. The foundation stone was laid on 11 March 1928, and the station opened as Bombay Central on 18 December 1930.
- Architect: Claude Batley, a British architect working in Bombay.
- Builder: the Shapoorji Pallonji group completed the work in about 21 months.
- Original cost: about ₹15.6 million (1.56 crore) at the time.
- 1997: renamed Mumbai Central, following the city's change of name.
- 1 February 2018: the station code changed from BCT to MMCT. Older tickets and timetables may still show BCT.
Inside Mumbai Central
Mumbai Central has 9 platforms: 5 for mainline trains and 4 for suburban (local) trains. The mainline terminus and the suburban station are side by side, so check the signs for your train type.

- Look for the code MMCT; older bookings may show the former code BCT.
- Arriving by the Aqua Line metro at Jagannath Shankar Sheth station avoids the traffic around the terminus forecourt.
