History
- 14 November 1868: the station opens to the public, around the time of the Delhi–Ambala–Amritsar line.
- 1886: the Oudh and Rohilkhand Railway main line is extended through Roorkee to Saharanpur, making it a major terminus.
- 1907: the present main building is completed.
At its peak, Saharanpur was one of the most important junctions in the subcontinent, running 24 hours a day because of the Moradabad, Delhi and Ambala sections that met here, and it had workshops for steam engines.

Locomotive depots
Saharanpur is also a locomotive base. The Electric Loco Shed at Khanalampura, commissioned in 2015, is among the newest electric loco sheds in Indian Railways. Alstom has set up a separate depot here for its WAG-12 high-power freight locomotives, designed to hold 250 of them.
Modernisation
Saharanpur is being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme at a cost of about ₹15 crore. The Delhi–Saharanpur track is being upgraded to raise speeds from 110 to 130 km/h, and all 14 level crossings on the route are being replaced with road over- or under-bridges.
