Arriving in the City of Lakes
Udaipur, capital of the old kingdom of Mewar, is famous for its palaces reflected in Lake Pichola, and Udaipur City station (code UDZ) is the main way in by rail. The station is on NH-8 at Jawahar Nagar, about 2.5 km from the city centre and about 25 km from Udaipur airport. It belongs to North Western Railway's Ajmer division and stands about 583 metres above sea level among the Aravalli hills.
A wall that grows
Udaipur City has one of the more unusual station features in India: a living wall, a vertical garden of about 1,400 square feet of plants. It cost about ₹13.5 lakh and was completed in just 14 days, softening the station's concrete with greenery in keeping with the Lake City's image.
Three lines into the hills
- Udaipur–Chittorgarh section, east to Chittorgarh and onward to Delhi, Jaipur and Kota
- Udaipur–Mavli–Marwar line, north-west towards Marwar Junction
- Aasrva–Udaipur line, south towards Gujarat
For decades these were metre-gauge lines; their conversion to broad gauge brought Udaipur onto direct routes to Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.
