Bengaluru's second terminus
Yesvantpur Jn (code YPR) is one of Bengaluru's busiest stations, and you'll see its name spelt several ways: Yesvantpur, Yeshwantpur railway station, Yeshwanthpur and Yeshwanthapura. Whatever the spelling, it is the same junction on the Bengaluru–Tumakuru Road, run by the South Western Railway under its Bengaluru division. It was developed specifically to reduce the rush at Bangalore City, today KSR Bengaluru.
Built for starting and ending trains
YPR has 6 platforms on 8 tracks, and its layout shows its job:
- Platforms 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 are for trains that start or end at Yesvantpur.
- Platform 3 is generally used by trains passing through.
The station is about 915 metres above sea level and is being rebuilt, so walkways and entrances may change.
The ₹380 crore rebuild
Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, the redevelopment of Yesvantpur was awarded to Girdhari Lal Constructions at an initial estimated cost of about ₹380 crore, to turn the junction into a modern multimodal hub. Its centrepiece is an air concourse of about 14,800 square metres spanning the tracks, a circulation and waiting space modelled on airport lounges, with door-frame metal detectors, baggage scanners and passenger information displays.
Two lines
- Bengaluru–Guntakal section, north towards Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad and Mumbai
- Bengaluru–Arsikere–Hubballi line, north-west towards Hubballi and Goa
A Vande Bharat Express links Yesvantpur with Kacheguda in Hyderabad.
Facilities
Yesvantpur has 6 non-AC retiring rooms, 12 dormitory beds, an air-conditioned VIP lounge, an ATM and free Wi-Fi.
Getting there
The Yeshwanthpur station on the Namma Metro Green Line is within walking distance, the easiest way to and from central Bengaluru.
