The IR-DRDO bio-toilet system was developed as part of Indian Railways' efforts to improve sanitation and reduce the discharge of human waste onto railway tracks.
The technology was developed jointly by Indian Railways and the Defence Research and Development Organisation. A waste-retention tank is installed beneath the coach toilet. Inside the tank, anaerobic bacteria break down human waste into simpler products.
The biological process produces mainly water and gases. The gases are released through the system, while the resulting liquid is discharged after treatment or disinfection according to the system's design.
The first passenger train fitted with IR-DRDO bio-toilets was the Bundelkhand Express, where the system entered service in January 2011. Following trials and feedback, the technology was progressively installed across a large number of passenger coaches.
The technology became an important part of Indian Railways' efforts toward cleaner stations, cleaner tracks and improved onboard sanitation. Newer rolling stock may employ more advanced systems such as bio-vacuum toilets.
