LHB technology transformed Indian Railways' passenger coach fleet by introducing lightweight stainless-steel construction, modern bogies and improved safety and ride characteristics.

Category
Passenger Coach & Rolling Stock Technology
Used for
Modern passenger coaches for express, premium and long-distance trains
Benefits
LHB coaches offer lighter stainless-steel construction, improved ride quality, higher-speed capability, better braking performance, reduced maintenance requirements and improved passenger safety compared with older-generation coach designs.
Introduced
2000 — first use of LHB coaches on Indian Railways

Linke Hofmann Busch, commonly known as LHB, coach technology represents one of the most important upgrades to Indian Railways' conventional passenger rolling stock.

LHB coaches were first used by Indian Railways in 2000. Their design uses lightweight and corrosion-resistant stainless-steel construction along with modern bogies and braking systems. The design supports higher operating speeds while providing improved stability and passenger comfort.

Compared with older conventional coaches, LHB coaches provide improved ride quality, modern suspension, better braking performance and lower maintenance requirements. Their design is also better suited to higher-speed passenger operations.

LHB coaches have gradually replaced older conventional coaches on many important Indian Railways services, including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto and numerous Mail and Express trains.

Indian Railways' production units have progressively increased LHB production, making the platform a major part of the country's modern passenger coach fleet.
