TECHNOLOGY DETAIL

Real-Time Train Information System (RTIS)

RTIS automatically collects train movement information from locomotive-mounted equipment, improving railway control and the accuracy of passenger train-running information.

Category
GPS, Satellite & Digital Railway Technology
Used for
Real-time train tracking, automatic arrival and departure updates and train-control monitoring
Benefits
More accurate train-location information, reduced manual reporting, improved train control, better passenger information and faster emergency communication.
Introduced
2018 — Phase-I implementation

The Real-Time Train Information System, or RTIS, is an important digital train-monitoring technology implemented by Indian Railways.

The system has been developed and deployed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation. Locomotive-mounted equipment uses satellite-assisted positioning and communication to provide information about train movement.

RTIS can automatically capture train arrival, departure and run-through information and send this information to railway control systems. It can also provide location and speed updates while a train is travelling between stations.

The data is integrated with railway operational systems such as the Control Office Application and can contribute to more accurate train-running information made available through systems such as the National Train Enquiry System.

RTIS reduces dependence on manual reporting, gives controllers better visibility of train movement and can also support emergency communication between locomotives and control centres.

Phase-I implementation covering thousands of electric locomotives was underway during 2018, with further expansion following successful deployment.
