First UNESCO Indian Mountain Railway | Railway Quiz

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway became the first component of what is now UNESCO's Mountain Railways of India World Heritage property.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999.

The historic narrow-gauge railway connects the plains of West Bengal with the hill station of Darjeeling.

Its engineering features include sharp curves, loops and zigzag reverses that allow trains to climb difficult mountain terrain.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was added to the World Heritage property in 2005, followed by the Kalka–Shimla Railway in 2008.
