Ahmednagar railway station, now Ahilyanagar
Ahmednagar railway station (code ANG), officially renamed Ahilyanagar railway station, serves the city of Ahmednagar in Maharashtra. It is run by the Central Railway and lies on the Daund–Manmad line, with the new Ahmednagar–Beed–Parli Vaijnath line starting here. The station stands about 650 metres above sea level on the Deccan plateau.
History
The broad-gauge Manmad–Daund line opened in 1878, built by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway to join its south-eastern and north-eastern main lines. Central Railway is now doubling it. Ahmednagar is moving to the Pune division, as 24 stations on the Daund–Ankai section transfer from the Solapur division, which could open the way for DEMU services between Ahmednagar and Pune.
New lines, old dreams
- Ahmednagar–Beed–Parli: a 261 km line costing about ₹2,272 crore, shared equally by the Centre and Maharashtra, being built from both ends.
- Kalyan–Ahmednagar ("third ghat"): a 184 km project planned since British times, surveyed in 1973, 2000, 2006 and 2014. Its biggest challenge is an 18.96 km tunnel under the Malshej Ghat; the Kalyan–Murbad first phase is at survey stage.
- Ahmednagar–Aurangabad: a 115 km line surveyed in March 2021.
If these are built, Ahmednagar could become a junction as important as Daund.
