The long-awaited Barwadih line
The Railway Ministry plans a new 178 km line from Ambikapur to Barwadih in Jharkhand. The idea is old: the British first proposed it in 1925 to move minerals between these coal-rich areas. The line would link Howrah, Dhanbad and Ranchi with Mumbai via Barwadih, Ambikapur, Katni, Jabalpur and Itarsi, cutting about 420 km from the Howrah–Mumbai route via Jabalpur. Today the two cities are linked mainly via Nagpur and Bilaspur, about 1,970 km, or via Jabalpur and Itarsi, about 2,162 km. A separate new line from Ambikapur to Renukoot was being surveyed in 2023.
Upgrades
Ambikapur has been chosen for the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which plans better station access, circulating areas, waiting halls, toilets, lifts or escalators where needed, free Wi-Fi, "One Station One Product" kiosks and improved passenger information. Parking is available at the station.
