Hajipur railway station, home of the East Central Railway
Hajipur railway station (code HJP), officially Hajipur Junction, is a major station in Hajipur, district headquarters of Vaishali in Bihar. It is in the Sonpur division of the East Central Railway, and Hajipur is the headquarters of that zone. The station is 33 km by rail from Patna Junction.
History
- 1862: the railway line through Hajipur opens.
- 1884: the 51 km Hajipur–Muzaffarpur line opens.
- 8 September 1996: the East Central Railway is inaugurated with its headquarters at Hajipur.
- 1 October 2002: the zone becomes operational.
- July 2016: electrification of the Patna–Sonpur–Hajipur section is completed.
Lines and bridges
Three lines connect Hajipur with Muzaffarpur, Chhapra and Vaishali, and towards Barauni. A second 5.5 km bridge over the Gandak between Sonpur and Hajipur allows double-line traffic. A 21 km line over the Digha–Sonpur rail–road bridge links north and south Bihar, while a new 148.3 km Hajipur–Sugauli line via Vaishali and the doubling of the 59 km Chhapra–Hajipur line add capacity.
