A station that moved
- 1862: the Jamalpur–Munger section opens, bringing the railway to the city.
- 2016: the old station closes to make way for the Munger Ganga Bridge. A new station opens on 11 April 2016, about 2.1 km south-east of the old one, in the Purabsarai area, on the new broad-gauge line.
- 2020: electrification is completed.
Why the bridge matters
The Munger Ganga Bridge links Munger, across the river, with the Barauni–Guwahati line on the north bank. Lines through the station include the Jamalpur–Khagaria and Sahibpur Kamal routes and the Munger–Ratanpur line (the Jamalpur bypass). Through Jamalpur, Munger also connects to the Sahibganj loop and the Delhi–Kolkata routes.
Platforms and layout
The station has 2 platforms on three fully electrified tracks, linked by a subway, and has room for two more platforms in future. Parking and access for disabled passengers are available. It stands about 59 metres above sea level and is roughly 1.2 km from Munger Fort.
Trains
Services calling at Munger include the Jaynagar–Bhagalpur Express, the Deoghar–Agartala Weekly Express and the Godda–Gomti Nagar Weekly Express. For a wider choice of long-distance trains, many travellers use nearby Jamalpur Junction.
