Introducing Nagpur

Nagpur railway station, officially Nagpur Junction (station code NGP), sits almost at the geographical centre of India and at the crossing of two of its most important trunk routes: the Howrah–Mumbai line (east–west) and the Delhi–Chennai line (north–south). It is shared by two zones, the Central Railway and the South East Central Railway, each with a Nagpur division. About 185,000 passengers a day use the station, and around 254 mail, express and passenger trains halt here, 22 of them starting or ending at Nagpur.

Nagpur's history

  • 1867: railways reach Nagpur when part of the Bombay–Bhusaval–Nagpur line opens.
  • 1881: the Nagpur State Railway connects Nagpur towards Calcutta.
  • 1906: the foundation stone of the present building is laid.
  • 15 January 1925: the new station building is inaugurated by the Governor, Sir Frank Sly. The earlier station stood further east, near Shukrawari Lake.
  • 1988–1992: electrification of the lines into Nagpur, from Ballarshah, Amla and Tharsa.

The 1925 building is listed as a Heritage Grade II structure.

Why Nagpur matters

Because north–south and east–west traffic crosses here, the Nagpur–Wardha section is one of the busiest stretches of railway in India. A large share of trains between Delhi and South India, and between Mumbai and eastern India, pass through Nagpur. One curiosity: Indian Railways' shortest scheduled train run is between Nagpur and Ajni, stations just 3 km apart.

Inside Nagpur

NGP has 8 platforms on 13 tracks, some 309 metres up. It is one of the top 100 stations in Indian Railways by total bookings, and has retiring rooms with a reception-cum-lounge.

Who calls at Nagpur

Nagpur is a stop for Rajdhani, Duronto, Vande Bharat and many express trains in all four directions, and 22 services originate here. Nagpur's halts on all four trunk directions are on our train schedule page.
