Rajgir railway station, the railhead for an ancient town
Rajgir railway station (code RGD) serves Rajgir in Nalanda district, Bihar. It is in the Danapur division of the East Central Railway and lies on the Bakhtiyarpur–Rajgir–Tilaiya line. Daily passenger and express trains connect it with Patna Junction, Bakhtiyarpur Junction, Bihar Sharif, Harnaut, Fatuha, Gaya Junction, Tilaiya and Koderma.
From light railway to broad gauge
- 1903: Martin's Light Railways builds the 2 ft 6 in narrow-gauge Bakhtiarpur–Bihar Light Railway as far as Bihar Sharif.
- 1911: the light railway is extended to Rajgir.
- 1950: the local district board takes over the line.
- 1962: it is nationalised and later converted to broad gauge.
- 2010: a broad-gauge extension from Rajgir to Tilaiya opens. Sanctioned in 2001–02, the route is to continue to Koderma and will carry coal from the Hazaribagh–Koderma belt to the Barh power station.
- 2016–17: the line is electrified.
Platforms and facilities
Rajgir has 3 platforms on five tracks, joined by two foot overbridges, with a third under construction. Facilities include:
- Waiting rooms, a retiring room and computerised reservation counters
- Automatic ticket vending machines
- Vegetarian and non-vegetarian refreshment rooms, a tea stall and a book stall
- A post office, a Government Railway Police office and vehicle parking
Several local passenger trains run from Rajgir to neighbouring towns at frequent intervals.
Getting here by air
The nearest airports are Gaya (about 75 km) and Patna (about 100 km). An airport at Rajgir has been planned. The station is on NH 120, near Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Rajgir.
